BIBLES EXCLUDED FROM REVIEW
500 reviewed translations
It is my intention to include in this review at least 80 % of such Bible translations (or revisions) in english, which contain approximately the full text of every canonical book in the Tanakh (Old Testament) or the New Testament. Currently the review includes 64 % of such translations.
Below is a list of the 500 Bible versions, which are included in the review now. If the link to the Bible translation is in black colour, the full text of the Bible is available online for free. (Some of these websites may require a registration, which does not cost anything.) If the link has red colour, the translation is not available for free online.
I do not always use the same abbreviation as the publisher of the translation uses, or which is used at popular Bible websites. For example, what is commonly known as “KJV” is seldom the original King James Version from year 1611, but more probably the 1769 revision. I use the abbreviations KJV1611 and KJV1769 for these Bible versions. When we discuss 800 Bible translations, abbreviations that are based on the initials of Bible product names would be difficult to remember, except for the most famous Bibles. I have favoured a bit longer abbreviations, within a maximum limit of 7 characters, often including several letters of the name of translator or some other word, which is easy to remember and preferably unique to that Bible version.
I have usually trusted that Bible texts offered by various websites are correct and without errors, compared to what the original publisher has intended. However, I generally distrust publicly available transcriptions of any text that was published in the medieval “blackletter” text type (which was the primary text style in books until approximately year 1550), because such transcriptions usually contain differences compared to the original in nearly every verse. Converting medieval blackletter text into modern letters requires awareness of the possibility that the text may contain scribal abbreviations, which represent more letters than are directly visible in the text. Academic publishers of later “reprints” of blackletter era Bible versions have also intentionally modernized the ortography a bit — often without telling it to the reader.
Common mistakes in publicly available transcriptions are that the ligature “the” (small e above y) is written as “ye”, ligature “that” (small t above y) as “yt”, or the ligature “es” (which looks like a very tall and narrow letter p) as “s”. The tilde ~ above a vowel is often ignored, which usually represents an “n” after the vowel, sometimes “m”. A vertical tilde over a letter stands for “er” following that letter, at least in WYL1400.
WYE138C abbreviates “turne” as tñe in Other Laws 23:10, with a very strongly curled tilde above the N. Letter w with superscript t stands for wiŧ (not with) in WYE138C. In Loukas 3:4 WYE138C has the abbreviation “cende”, with an i (or vertical macron) between and above the letters C and first E. I have transcribed this as “criende”, using the small i above the letters, and adding an R to complete the verb that obviously belongs to this phrase. Another possible transcription would have been “cryende”, if the symbol above the letters is assumed to be a vertical macron, not vowel i.
It would be a legitimate approach to retain the scribal abbreviations in the text, and only change the font from blackletter to something modern. In that case the tildes and superscript letters would be printed also in the modern text as tildes and superscript letters. Academic researchers often do this, when they quote a very short text excerpt, but more extensive texts are usually edited in a style that is more comfortable to read.
The Wycliffe Bible uses medieval english letters yogh and thorn in the editions of the 14th and 15th century. As late as in 1848 the edition by William Pickering retains both of these medieval letters. The 1850 edition by Forshall & Madden retains the yogh, but replaces thorn with TH. Most editions of the Wycliffe Bible after the 15th century replace thorn with TH, according to later english ortography. (The variation “ŧem self” vs. “hem self” in Matt. 19:12 might be an intentional grammatical modification, or a mistake caused by the visual similarity of letters thorn and H.) Some modern versions of medieval Bibles, which were edited by private persons, transcribe thorn as Y, apparently because the transcriber did not know that a letter exists in the medieval english alphabet, which looks a bit like Y but is not Y. I transcribe thorn as Ŧ / ŧ (e.g. “ŧere” = there), to help the modern reader to guess its connection to TH in modern ortography. The medieval thorn looks quite similar to P, Y or a heart shape.
When a situation evolved in medieval english that G was pronounced sometimes hard (like G in “get”), and sometimes softly (like Y in “yet”), a new letter yogh was invented to write G when it is pronounced softly. The letter yogh looked like modern number 3. When this letter disappeared from the english alphabet, it was usually replaced with Y as the first letter of a word (e.g. “you”), and with G or GH in other circumstances (e.g. “again”, “right”). I help the modern reader to understand words that contain this letter, by writing yogh as Ŷ as the first letter of a word (e.g. “ŷou”), and as Ĝ in other circumstances (e.g. “aĝen”, “riĝt”).
I always give at least 2 deviation points for difficult readability to a word that contains a yogh or thorn, because the modern reader is not familiar with these letters — although my helpful transcriptions Ŧ, Ŷ and Ĝ are not so difficult to read, maybe worth 1 deviation point only. The letters yogh and thorn are included in translation WYE1848 in Loukas 3:4, for example.
Early editions of the Wycliffe Bible and WYE1848 abbreviate the name Iesus as “ihc” with a macron, tilde, apostrophe or dot between the letters H and C, above them. I transcribe this abbreviation as ihĉ, if the source text uses a tilde or macron, or ihċ if the source text uses a dot or apostrophe. This abbreviation differs from other scribal abbreviations in medieval english Bibles, because it does not actually stand for the english letters i, h and c, but rather for the greek lowercase letters iota, ēta and the word-final form of sigma (whose english equivalents would be i, e and s) — the three first letters of the greek word iēsous (Jesus). This abbreviation was adopted into english Bibles from the latin Vulgate, in which the form “ihs” is also common (so that the third letter is S, not C). WYE138C uses a rare abbreviation Ihū. The idea is the same as in ihĉ, imitating letters number 1, 2 and 5 of the greek word iēsous, not the first three letters.
When medieval or later texts have converted the abbreviation ihĉ (or very rarely: ihŝ or ihū) into a complete word, they have made varying guesses or personal decisions about the correct ortography: Ihesus, Jhesus, Iesus, Jesus, Iesu or Jesu. The most logical transcription would be Iesus (pronounced as “dzeh-sous”), because different uppercase consonants for I and J did not exist yet at the time of Wycliffe. Such a difference was invented some 140 years later, to separate the vowel I and consonantal J in ortography. (One might expect that the letter I stood for consonantal Y sound, rather than DZ sound. Originally it did, but the pronunciation of consonantal I in english changed from Y to DZ during the french invasion and political control of England in 1066 – 1154. The pronunciation DZ was later softened into SZ in french, but it has remained as DZ in english.)
Another logical option would have been to visually imitate the whole greek word Iēsous, possibly as Ih6ouc or Ihsouc, but such a form was probably never used by anyone in english. The popular forms Ihesus and Jhesus theoretically include the letter E twice: first as a visual imitation of the greek long E, and then the latin E. Writers who used the form Ihesus or Jhesus perhaps did not know that the abbreviation ihĉ is a visual imitation of greek letters. They may have assumed that the letter combination IH intends to indicate that the I is pronounced consonantally. This was not its purpose, however.
In the review I have written in a complete form nearly all words, which contain medieval scribal abbreviations. I have not given deviation points for difficult readability because of scribal abbreviations, even in complex cases such as thorn and superscript t = “that”, or thorn and a point above = “ther” (there), which are used in early editions of the Wycliffe Bible. However, I make an exception with the visual imitations of greek letters, ihĉ, ihċ and ihū: I write them as such in the review, and I give them 3 deviation points for difficult readability. WYE138C abbreviates the name David as dd’. Also this abbreviation I write in the review as such, and give it 3 deviation points for difficult readability.
Some medieval Bibles abbreviate the word “and” sometimes with the character &. In modern usage I would give 2 deviation points for inconvenient readability, but I have not encountered any modern cases in the review. In medieval Bibles I have converted the character & into word “and”, equally as other scribal abbreviations are converted into complete words. This was done in Markos 12:35 with GENEV60, GENEV99, GREAT and some versions of the Wycliffe Bible. In Mattityah 19:12 this was done with COVDALE and GENEV60.
