The expression “in the desert” is between the thoughts “voice of someone who is shouting” and “prepare the way of the
Lord” (also in the hebrew original version of this verse). It is not self-evident,
to which of these two thoughts the expression “in the desert” belongs. Of these 466 reviewed Bible
translations, approximately 95 % say that the voice of the shouter is in the desert. This seems logical considering the narrative in the New Testament, as
Yohanan the Baptist is preaching in the desert. Some translations are ambiguous, either because they don’t mention the desert at all (BETTERL, MARIASV), or because
they don’t use punctuation to divide the thought into such smaller units (CONSVRI). Some translations say: “in the desert you should prepare the way of
the Lord” (e.g. CJB98, CONCORD, ROTHERH, PICKERN, VOICE, WEYM). This can seem logical regarding the original hebrew
version of this verse, which mentions a desert (or plain) at the end of the verse. If desert is mentioned also in the first part of this two-fold
exhortation, it creates logical and poetic balance. This review accepts both of these possible interpretations. The text samples BYZR, SAMPLET and SAMPLEP use double colons (::)
around the expression “in the desert”, to highlight to the reader that it is not certain, whether this expression is logically connected with the
preceding or the following thought.
The word “legontos” is a present participle in genitive, and literally means: “of the saying one”, or “of the one [who is] saying”.
According to the grammar of koiné greek, participles, adjectives etc. replicate the genitive (or other) form of the word that they refer to. This is not done in
english, except possibly when the words are separated by a comma. I use this possibility in translation sample SAMPLET, separating Yeshayahu, the prophet and “the
one who is saying” from each other with a comma, which creates the situation that genitive can be used in each of these three expressions. This slows
down the thought, however, and such a technique would not be reasonable in many other scenarios, where several words in greek text repeat the case of the main noun.
I accept that this is a “force majeure” situation, due to differences in the grammars of the languages. I have marked these deviations in form-faithfulness
with 0 points, in the following style: “of Yeshayahu the prophet, saying” => “of Yeshayahu ·OF₀ the prophet, ·OF₀ ·ONE₀ saying₀”.
The word “legontos” (saying) is not included in all manuscript variants. Many Bibles have attempted to translate this word, while other
translations have omitted this word. For the sake of fair comparability of the deviation scores, all inaccuracies in translations of the word “legontos”
have been marked with 0 deviation points. (The deviation points that such inaccuracies would have otherwise received, are marked in double curly brackets {{ }} in the list of
all grammatical deviation scores.)
The word “Kyrios” has many meanings in the New Testament. One of them is a reference to the name of God. Luke 3:4 contains a direct quote from Tanakh
(Old Testament), which uses the name of God in this phrase. I have accepted without deviation points all such translation variants for the word “Kyriou”
in this verse, which would be accepted for the name of God in hebrew language. No deviation points are given for failing to indicate a difference
between this meaning “Lord” and the generic meaning “lord” (e.g. with small caps), because
none of the currently known greek manuscripts of the New Testament indicate this difference.
